Walmart has introduced robots in their new Calgary warehouse and plans to add them to their two Ontario facilities in Mississauga and Cornwall as well. In Calgary, with a warehouse that is 8 football fields long, the time to get products from trailers and into the facility has been cut by 90%. Walmart says that jobs are not at risk and that robots have increased safety and ergonomics by reducing repetitive strain and injuries.

Walmart is shifting focus from online to retail and is moving back into brick-and-mortar expansion. In 2016 Walmart USA had slowed new store openings to focus on its online sales and hasn’t opened a new store in the United States since the fall of 2021. Walmart U.S. president and CEO John Furner confirmed construction plans for 12 new projects for 2024 in his blog on the company’s website.

Walmart Canada’s largest store at the Square One shopping centre in Mississauga has reopened after an 18-month renovation. It will be a prototype for innovation and feature the first Health Hub. COO John Bayliss says, “The Walmart Health Hub centralizes the store’s pharmacy, vision centre and medical clinic into one area to provide a one-stop shop for health and wellness. The hub is supported by the company’s digital pharmacy app, which includes a new health guide area that provides information on health solutions and an interactive concierge-style service. This service can schedule pharmacy and optical appointments, find health and wellness products in store and offers a vitamin recommendation tool.
